1. What inspires you to run?
It started as a way to be active and healthy. I played tennis in high school and college but had lost my love of playing. As a result I was terribly out of shape. My father had triple bypass and that motivated me to try running. What inspires me now is not just that, but the therapy it provides, and the fellowship it brings by being a part of the club.
2. When did you start running?
I was in my early 40’s when I started doing short runs. In 2007 I did my first half and did 2 or 3 more over the next couple of years but went back to doing a few miles a run. In 2015 a bully named Wendell made me visit the club, and then he made me join. It wasn’t long before he and another bully named Will made me run my first marathon at age 53. I’ve been Stockholmed by MRC now, so I guess I’m in it for good.
3. Favorite post-race meal?
I generally eat fairly lean. Not always but most of the time. After a marathon I indulge, and my favorite meal is a big honkin juicy burger with cheese and a fried egg.
4. Favorite race.
I haven’t run a marathon yet that I’ve regretted doing. By number of times run you’d determine that it’s probably Cowtown as I’ve run it 4 times with number 5 coming up. It’s easily my favorite local race but for the time being I think the Marine Corps Marathon tops the list.
5. Best advice to new runners.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be intimidated by the experienced runners. We all started at the beginning. And we’d love to have you join our pace group. We’re always looking for new people to tell our stories to.
6. One fun fact about you…
I’ve been a comic book fan/reader since I was 6 years old and have been spending a lot of my money in that industry for a very long time. But I haven’t been doing so for the last couple of years. Lately I’ve been dipping my toes in the manga scene as time allows. My favorite so far is Attack on Titan.
